Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre is a multi-use recreation complex, combining community spaces, aquatics, an arena, gymnasium, and senior’s activity center within one facility. The project sits in the middle of the city, at the equilibrium of the mountains above and the sea below.

HJCRC is derived through the spaces between. Large masonry masses are placed into the landscape to ground the various program spaces and frame a central courtyard. Black box volumes slide on top of these masses, containing the large programs into a series of five boxes at different elevations. The spaces between these volumes form the circulation and atrium, acting as the glue that links community and recreation together.

Project work through the DD and CD phases were primarily focused in the changing rooms and natatorium area. This volume is contained within one of the box volumes, with a large wood ceiling envleloping the interior for warmth. Programming flanking the natatorium volume are carved into the large masonry plinth elements.

These carve-outs are wrapped in a feature colour used throughout the project, providing a visual cue for wayfinding and signage throughout the building.
