The Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex project combines a building addition and existing building renovation, providing a new natatorium, social space, and retrofitted fitness space from the existing natatorium.

SGRC is derived through its surrounding landscape conditions. The upper volume references the forest tree canopy as inspiration for the structural composition, while the lower volume forest as an enclosure for the lower volume. These volumes are then applied vertical rhythms as a function of daylighting and cladding spans into the lower and upper volume.

The primary role during the project entailed the design and detailing of the exterior envelope and cladding. This included management of the exterior and interior details sets, developing key connections. Notably, developing the design language between upper and lower volumes, curtain walls and cladding.

The rhythms established in the massing are further broken down in the lower volume, where the cladding varies in intensity to create a sense of flow. This uses a human-scaled intervention to create the sensation of the ‘ribbon’ concept for the lower volume. This contrasts the rigid consistency of the upper volume, establishing an architectural dichotomy.

Custom cladding profiles are deployed in different sets of intensities to create a sense of varied flow for the lower ribbon volume, relating to different rhythms found in the natural landscape of Campbell River. This language is carried into the fritting patterns for glazed portions of the south facade, to mitigate glare in the natatorium.

Where the lower ribbon volume meets major entry and custom viewpoints, wood carveouts are created to guide users into the major spaces, creating a material form of wayfinding from exterior to interior.

Key details were developed at the south facade, outlining the connection between the lower and upper volumes.

The upper volume is comprised of a prefabricated truss system, integrating steel decking and membrane into a single unit that is tied together through a continuous roofing membrane. This spans the natatorium volume and wraps down with curtain wall along the south and north walls (shown in the detail right), and cladding to the east and west.
